What Is a Mole Crab?
Despite the name, mole crabs aren't true crabs. They're small crustaceans that spend most of their lives buried beneath the sand in the swash zone- the area where waves wash up and then recede.
They are completely harmless, don't pinch, and are safe to gently observe before releasing them back into the water.
Many anglers use mole crabs as fishing bait, but they're also fascinating little creatures to watch as they quickly burrow back into the sand.
Where to Find Mole Crabs
Look in the shallow water right where the waves are breaking.

On beaches with active surf

How to Find Mole Crabs

You can also:
Scoop up wet sand with your hands.
Let the water wash away the sand.
Look for small gray or tan creatures about the size of a thumb.
Once you find one, place it in a bucket with a little seawater so kids can observe it for a few minutes.
