Why Townsizing Might Be My Favorite Travel Trend Yet

Have you heard of the newest travel trend? It's called townsizing...and I couldn't be more excited about it.

Instead of flocking to the same overcrowded tourist hotspots, travelers are seeking out smaller, lesser-known towns with authentic experiences, friendly locals, and room to slow down. It's a shift away from checking off famous landmarks and toward discovering places that feel genuine. (And smaller towns tend to be way less expensive than large cities!)

The best part? It's a win for everyone.

Choosing smaller destinations helps ease overtourism in heavily visited cities while supporting local businesses, restaurants, shops, and attractions that truly benefit from tourism dollars. Your vacation can have a positive impact while also giving you a more memorable experience.

The truth is, I've always been a small-town girl at heart.

As a mom traveling with two young kids, I love the slower pace. We don't need packed itineraries or long lines to have an incredible adventure.

Some of our favorite memories have come from wandering a charming Main Street, finding an amazing local playground, discovering a hidden swimming hole, or stumbling across a family-owned ice cream shop.

I've also found that smaller towns often place a huge emphasis on the outdoors. Whether it's waterfalls, hiking trails, rivers, lakes, or local parks, these destinations make it easy to unplug and spend time together in nature...which is exactly the kind of travel we love.

If you're looking to embrace the townsizing trend, here are a few of our favorite small-town destinations that we've visited in the past year:

Weaverville, North Carolina

Just outside Asheville, Weaverville completely won us over with its welcoming downtown, mountain views, and relaxed pace. We especially loved strolling Main Street, letting the kids splash in the creek and play at Lake Louise Park, exploring the local nature trails, and ending the day at a neighborhood restaurant while the kids played nearby. It's the kind of place that encourages you to slow down and simply enjoy being together.

Brevard, North Carolina

Known as the "Land of Waterfalls," Brevard feels like it was made for adventurous families. We especially loved chasing waterfalls, exploring Pisgah National Forest, wandering through the charming downtown, and exploring the incredible O.P. Taylor's toy store. Almost every turn leads to another outdoor adventure. It's one of those places where you could spend a week and still leave with a list of things you want to come back and do.

Blue Ridge, Georgia

Blue Ridge has the perfect balance of mountain adventure and small-town charm. We loved wandering the quaint downtown, browsing local shops, enjoying great food, and using the town as a base for scenic hikes, waterfalls, and drives through the North Georgia mountains. And of course, Blue Ridge Lake deserves a visit! It is absolutely beautiful!

Greenville, South Carolina

Greenville has one of my favorite downtowns anywhere. We especially loved walking through Falls Park on the Reedy, watching the waterfall right in the middle of town, crossing Liberty Bridge, and finding parks, restaurants, and family-friendly spots all within easy walking distance. And we LOVED Unity Park- a huge and amazing playground and park just outside of downtown. Greenville has the energy of a larger city but still feels approachable and relaxed. Truly, this might be one of our favorites on this list!

Dunedin, Florida

Dunedin has such a fun, laid-back coastal vibe. We love strolling the waterfront, exploring the colorful downtown, grabbing ice cream, and hopping over to Honeymoon Island for beach time and nature trails. One of our favorite evenings was simply grabbing a carry-out pizza and walking to Edgewater Park and playground for an easy sunset dinner. It has that classic Old Florida charm that's becoming harder to find.

Lakeland, Florida

Lakeland surprised us in the best way. Between the beautiful lakes, expansive parks, the gardens, and its vibrant downtown, it's such an easy place to spend an entire day. We especially loved how walkable everything felt and how many family-friendly stops were packed into one destination. And of course, you have to visit Bonnet Springs Park if you're anywhere in the area! It's FREE, and a truly delightful park and playground.

Crystal River, Florida

Crystal River is one of those places that reminds you just how incredible Florida's natural springs are. We especially loved paddling the crystal-clear water, spotting wildlife, and soaking in the peaceful beauty of the area. It's one of Florida's most unforgettable outdoor destinations! The downtown is very charming too, with lots of little shops and restaurants. Hunter Springs Park is right in downtown and has a great playground and swimming area. We packed a picnic and let the kids play while we took in the beautiful scenery.

Sometimes the most magical trips aren't to the places everyone else is talking about.

They're the places where you linger a little longer, chat with the locals, discover your new favorite coffee shop, and spend an entire afternoon outdoors because there's nowhere else you'd rather be.

For our family, the best adventures usually aren't the biggest...they're the ones that leave room to slow down, explore, and make memories together.
