Located right by Lake Mirror in downtown Lakeland, Barnett Family Park is one of the best free playgrounds for families in Central Florida. It’s simple, shaded, and thoughtfully designed- making it an easy yes for a low-stress, high-fun outing.
Why We Went Back Twice
We loved this park so much that we went two different evenings on the same trip.
The first night, we stopped by with a few snacks, planning to stay a little while. We ended up playing for hours and then walking all the way around the lake.
We enjoyed it so much that we grabbed carryout barbecue from a local restaurant the next night and brought it back. We ate at the picnic tables under the big tree while the kids played. They'd run over, take a couple of bites, and run right back to the playground. 😂
It's one of those easy setups where the kids are happy and the parents actually get to relax too.
What Kids Will Love at This Park
This is the kind of playground where kids actually stay and play. It's a big playground, with a separate fully fenced area for younger kids and another fully fenced area for bigger kids, so you can relax knowing everyone is contained.

The Real Star: Lake Mirror at Dusk
The playground is great. But the real magic is right next door.
Lake Mirror is wrapped in a grand, historic promenade lined with vintage lamp posts. When they flicker on at dusk and reflect across the water, it's so dreamy you'd swear you'd stepped into a fairy tale.
Strolling the promenade, it's easy to picture old Florida. On our walks we passed musicians playing, lots of families out for an evening stroll, and a beautiful rose garden. It felt safe, peaceful and a little bit enchanted.
Pro tip: Time your visit so you finish at the playground right around sunset, then walk the lake as the lights come on.
Make It a Half-Day Outing
This park is best when you don’t rush it. We went in the early evening, which was perfect for a casual picnic dinner and a stroll around the lake. Tips below:
Pack a picnic (or pick up carryout!) and use the shaded tables, or bring a blanket for the grass. There’s plenty of space to spread out and relax while the kids play.
When you’re ready for a change of pace, walk over to Lake Mirror. The open lawn is perfect for running around, and the historic promenade is one of the prettiest spots in Lakeland.
Staying downtown? The park is walkable to downtown Lakeland hotels and restaurants, which makes it a perfect easy stop.
