Disney vs MSC Cruise (With Kids): Which Is Actually Worth It?

If you’re trying to decide between a Disney cruise and MSC...these two are not the same experience.
We’ve now done both with our kids, and while MSC is a great value, Disney felt like a completely different level from the moment we stepped onboard.
That said… Disney is also significantly more expensive.
So here’s the honest breakdown...what we actually paid, where Disney stands out, where MSC wins, and which one I’d choose depending on the situation.
What We Actually Paid
Let’s start here, because this is what most people want to know.
Disney Cruise Line (5 nights, Veranda, family of 4)
Cruise fare: ~$6,500
Gratuities: $290
Wi-Fi (2 devices): $120
Total: just over $7,000
Once we added a few extras (coffee, small purchases), we realistically landed closer to the mid-$7Ks all-in.
MSC Cruise (comparable sailing)
MSC was significantly cheaper.
Depending on sailing and room type, you’re typically looking at:👉 ~$3,500–$5,000 all-in
In other words:
You can almost take two MSC cruises for the price of one Disney cruise.
Cleanliness: Disney Wins
This was one of the most noticeable differences.
On Disney:
Everything felt spotless
Rooms, hallways, dining areas...consistently clean
Nothing felt worn or overlooked
On MSC:
Somewhat fine...but more variation
You notice more wear in high-traffic areas
Lots of trash left around...in the elevators, the bathrooms, etc.
This alone changes how the whole experience feels.
Design & Atmosphere: Not Even Close
Disney doesn’t just build a ship....they design an experience.
Every space feels intentional
Beautiful details everywhere
Cohesive, immersive design from start to finish
MSC felt more like:
A functional cruise ship vs. a designed experience
And that difference is hard to unsee once you’ve done both.
Food: Both Good, Disney Better
This one surprised me a bit.
Disney:
Consistently excellent across the board
Rotational dining adds variety + experience
Feels more curated
MSC:
Still very good (especially buffet variety)
Some standout options
But less consistent overall
Final take:
Both are good- but Disney is better.
Kids Areas: A Huge Difference
If you’re traveling with kids, this matters a lot.
Disney:
Highly themed, immersive spaces
Designed for different ages
Feels like part of the experience, not an afterthought
MSC:
Functional and fun
But more basic
Less immersive
Honest take:
The kids’ areas aren’t even close.
The “Magic” Factor (This Is Real)
This is the hardest part to quantify...but it’s real.
Disney does something that’s hard to replicate:
Staff interactions feel intentional and warm
Small, magical details everywhere
They anticipate needs instead of reacting
It adds up to:
A trip that feels special, not just fun
Value: MSC Wins
This is where MSC shines.
Lower upfront cost
More accessible for families
Easier to justify for shorter trips or frequent travel
If budget is your priority, MSC is a great option!
So… Which One Is Worth It?It depends on what you want out of the trip.
Choose MSC if:
You want a budget-friendly cruise
You plan to cruise more often
You’re okay trading some experience for cost
Choose Disney if:
You want a premium, immersive experience
This is a special trip or memory-making vacation
Cleanliness, design, and details matter to you
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, this isn’t really a direct comparison...because Disney and MSC are offering two very different types of trips.
MSC is a great value. It’s more affordable, more accessible, and a solid option for families who want to cruise without the higher price tag.
But Disney feels different.
It’s cleaner, more thoughtfully designed, and filled with the kind of small details that make the entire experience feel special...not just convenient.
So the question isn’t just “Which cruise is better?”It’s “What kind of experience do you want?”
Because if you’re looking for the most budget-friendly way to cruise, MSC makes a lot of sense.
But if you’re looking for something that feels a little more magical- something your kids will talk about long after it’s over- Disney is in a different league.
