If you’re looking for a Florida adventure that feels wild and magical… but is actually easy to do with kids, this is it.
Kayaking the mangrove tunnels at Ted Sperling Park is one of our favorite family outings. It’s calm, beginner-friendly, and just adventurous enough to feel really special.
Here’s exactly how to do it.
Where to Go
Ted Sperling Park is located on the south end of Lido Key, just outside Sarasota.
There’s a designated kayak launch area, and everything you need is right there in one spot.

Parking + Bathrooms (The Easy Part)
This is one of the reasons we love this spot so much:
Free parking (but it fills up- go early if you can)
Bathrooms on site
Easy access to the launch
You can truly “park and go,” which is huge with kids.
Renting a Kayak or SUP
You have two options:
Option 1: Rent on-site (easiest)
There are multiple rental vendors right at the park.
Kayaks + paddleboards available
They’ll carry your boat down to the water for you
Staff are super helpful and used to beginners
This is the best option if you want zero hassle.

Option 2: Bring your own
You can carry your kayak/SUP down to the launch
It’s a short, manageable walk

We're a local family and we LOVE taking the kids on this easy adventure.
What It’s Like on the Water
Once you launch, you’ll immediately notice:
Shallow, clear water
Very calm conditions (great for beginners + kids)
A clearly marked trail system
You’re paddling through Sarasota Bay and into the mangrove tunnels, which honestly feel like something out of a jungle.
Navigating the Mangrove Tunnels
This is what makes this spot so special.
The trails are clearly marked
You can grab a map from park rangers if you want one
It’s very hard to get lost if you follow the markers

The trails are clearly marked with large buoys
As you paddle through, the mangroves close in around you- it’s shaded, peaceful, and feels like a totally different world.
What Kids Love Most
This is where it becomes magic for families:
Wildlife spotting (fish, birds, sometimes crabs and more)
A built-in “scavenger hunt” feeling
Underwater viewers from rangers (game-changer!) They are the nicest people!

Ask the rangers for a map + scavenger hunt + underwater viewer
It turns the whole paddle into an adventure instead of just a workout.
Where to Stop + Take a Break
There are small spots along the way where you can:
Pull your kayak up
Have a snack or picnic
Let kids stretch and explore
These little breaks make it feel relaxed and doable, even with younger kids.

Is It Kid-Friendly?
Yes...this is one of the most kid-friendly paddles we’ve found in Florida.
Calm water
Short, flexible routes
Lots to look at and explore
It feels adventurous… without being stressful.
Tips Before You Go
A few things that will make your day even better:
Go early morning or later afternoon for cooler temps + fewer crowds
Bring water + snacks
Wear water-friendly shoes
Pack dry bags for phones/keys
Don’t forget sunscreen + hats
Check the tides if you can (lower tide = tighter tunnels, but still doable)
Why We Keep Coming Back
This is one of those rare Florida experiences that checks every box:
Easy to access
Affordable
Actually fun for kids
And genuinely beautiful
It feels like a little adventure you didn’t have to work that hard for.
And those are the ones that stick.
